BASQUE COOKING CLASS IN A GASTRONOMIC SOCIETY AND A MARKET TOUR

Hands-on, informative & fun cooking experience that will help you to understand the Basque affection for food. Visit local producers, learn about our seasonal products, cook and enjoy the fruits of your work in our gastronomic society just as the locals do!

WHAT TO EXPECT

Meet your local chef and the entrance to La Bretxa Market located in the Historic Part of San Sebastian. Remember – the cooking starts while shopping! Opened in 1870 La Bretxa is the oldest market in San Sebastian and it’s also one of the must visit places in the city! The 32 vegetable, fish and meat stalls represent what is the most important in the local culture: tradition, quality and zero km food.

The chef will discuss with you any restrictions and preferences you may have before choosing the correct menu. Then, you’ll discover La Brecha and visit our favorite stalls. The chef will explain how to select the best products, show you Basque favorites and suggest their counterparts in your country.

From the market you will head to a private members club called Gastronomic Society. ‘Txokos’ – as we call them in Euskara are not just places to cook and eat but most of all they play an enormously important part in our social life.

Let’s do some serious cooking now! You will start with ‘small pieces of heaven on a plate’. That’s right – pintxos! We will prepare a cold and a hot one. Next, you will learn how to prepare Basque favorite saladand sample some amazing local cheese. After that it’s time for the main dish. I won’t share all the secrets now but Basques love their seafood like nobody else and they put a lot of love into cooking. There are a bunch of rules the Basques follow while preparing their meals – get ready to learn some new tricks! We will finish up with a ‘pantxineta’ – vanilla custard, puff pastry and roast almond dessert.

Hungry? It’s time to enjoy the fruits of our work! We’ll enjoy the full traditional menu with a selection of local wines!

This experience is not only about cooking & eating – it is about diving into the history of Basque culture, traditions and customs. What events, over the years, made Basques become food fanatics? What are the pillars of Basque cuisine? What were pintxos back in a day and what do they mean to us today? We will answer all of these questions and many more for you to truly understand what it means to feel Basque.

Our chef will make sure that you have a great time and acquire the necessary skills to make the dishes at home. This is a perfect activity for those who want to discover this culinary art from the hands of an expert, learn more about the Basque cuisine and have fun!
