FeelFree offers you a day of hiking from the heart of Gipuzkoa to the most spectacular coastline of our territory
A journey through the foothills of the Massif Izarraitz, the caves of Ekain and Flisch of Zumaia.
We divide the day into three parts with the idea of enjoying radically different landscapes on a journey without great technical difficulty.
We begin with the valley of the Urola, the starting point to begin a hike Izarraitz foot of the massif, where we leave the vehicle. This mountain has an incredibly rich landscape and natural environment that continues to captivate the many pilgrims who come to the area.
We climb a path that takes us to one of the peaks that make up the massif of Izarraitz where we can enjoy breath-taking views of both the valley and the sea. Approx. 4 hours we will be back in the parking lot to head to Zestoa and closer to the caves of Ekain.
Of the numerous caves inhabited in prehistoric times, Ekain, Unesco heritage since 2008, deserve special mention. It is located in the small valley of Sastarrain and is considered one of the five most impressive prehistoric caves in the world. We will visit Ekainberri, the replica of the original protected caves, built in a beautiful natural setting.
To complete this day of hiking we will go to the flysch of Zumaia. We walk along a simple path to enjoy the famous flysch, a unique geological formation around the Cantabrian sea, which connects the mountains to the sea, allowing us to enjoy thousands of years of history.
Depending on the tide we will star the day here or in Izarraitz to be able to walk along the coast in an area of exceptional beauty.
To end the day we will travel to Getaria, a charming fishing village, birthplace of Juan Sebastian Elcano, the first man who sailed around the world in the 16th century.
We are definitely at a privileged place in the geography of Gipuzkoa, with one of the best preserved medieval historical centres.
Back to Donostia / San Sebastián our starting points.
