WHAT TO EXPECT
Meet your guide in the morning and embark on a gastronomic adventure through the French Basque Coast of Iparralde – one of the most picturesque regions on the Atlantic Coast. On the way to our first stop, your guide will give you an introduction on the history of the area, and what to expect throughout the day.
You will enjoy a spectacular drive along the corniche basque before reaching Saint Jean de Luz where we will kick off our culinary journey with a visit at the local ‘affineur’. Yes! We are talking about cheese and ‘affineur’ is a person who receives the cheese from producers and holds it in their shop until it’s perfectly ready to eat. We will taste a selection of ‘raised’ by our ‘affineur’ cheeses and sip some great French Basque wine from a nearby Irulegui region.
Next up, you will stroll along the streets of the town listening to the thrilling stories of local pirates – Corsairs, sailors and fisherman. We will also find time to visit the 13th century church of St. John the Baptist with its remarkable hull-shaped wood-panelled vault.
For those who would like to try local foie gras, we’ll introduce you to a tiny, farm store stocked with this French delicacy.
The trip to Saint Juan de Luz wouldn’t be complete without visiting a pastry shop where the world famed macarons were first created in 1660! We buy some of those before heading to sophisticated surfing & food paradise – Biarritz.
After having a glimpse of the Biarritz lighthouse we will head to Les Halles neighbourhood and its vibrant food market. We will visit the market’s most-loved bar where locals stop for a seafood aperitif while shopping—and that’s exactly what we’re here to do! You will try some of the world’s best oysters from Arcachon, delicious shrimps and snails…. if you dare! Pair your meal with a glass of great white wine from Bordeaux. But this isn’t it! Next you will discover a ‘truffle heaven’ – bar specialising in truffle flavored charcuterie and gourmet products from the region.
Then comes the time for pintxos! From Biarritz we will go back to the other side and explore the picturesque fishing village of Hondarribia. You will taste some of the best pintxos in an award-winning restaurant, learn about modern Basque cuisine and discuss the differences between French Basque and Spanish Basque cuisine.
At the end of the day you will be back to San Sebastian not only with a full belly but also with a full mind!
