Discover impressive cliffs of Zumaia, and famous for its grilled fish and txakoli wine Getaria on this geological, cultural and gastronomic journey along the Basque Coast. Here we say: ‘un planazo’ – basically an ideal plan for a day!
WHAT TO EXPECT
Start off the morning by meeting one of our local experts and boarding your comfortable van that will take you on this rich with culture, food and wine day trip along Basque Coast. On the way to our first stop, your guide will give you an introduction on the history of the area, and what to expect throughout the day.
Our first stop is the village of Zumaia located just on the edge of UNESCO geopark. It’s a perfect place to admire incredible, vertical rock strata cutting into the ocean. We are talking about flysch and karst. We will discover the dark sand beach Itzurun (one of the Game of Thrones locations) and iconic San Telmo chapel overlooking the cliffs. The experience wouldn’t be complete without trekking to the lookout located on the very tip of the cliff – take a deep breath and follow the guide!
From Zumaia we will drive a breathtaking coastal road to Getaria. This village has it all! Medieval charm, fishing traditions, txakoli wine, the best fish seafood restaurants and on top of that it was home to one of the most important explorers and one of the most talented designers of all times!
Getaria is one of the most important fishing ports in the region! We will start in the port visiting local canned fish producer who is using exclusively artisanal methods. You will discover the secrets of anchovy and tuna preservation and try some of the store specialities.
From the port we will drive up the hill to visit a Txakoli winery. We chose a small, sustainable one to embrace the traditional methods of wine making. You will dive in the world of ‘txakoli’ making process, Hondarribi Zuri and Beltza grapes and learn how to serve and pair it. Enough talking – time to try this bubbly, crisp drink!
Next up, you will head to the Old Quarter and stroll along its narrow, stone lanes. Get ready to hear thrilling stories of Juan Sebastian Elkano – the first man to circumnavigate the world. Learn about Cristobal Balenciaga referred to as “the master of us all” by Christian Dior.
No visit to Getaria is complete without trying their number ONE speciality – world famed charcoal grilled fish accompanied by a local wine! The village is home to some best fish restaurants in the region and part of the attraction is watching how they are being grilled on massive outdoor BBQs. The wine we’re talking about is called ‘Txakoli’ and it’s produced in the hills overlooking the town. You can’t go more local and authentic than that. It is a 100% zero kilometer meal.
It’s time to go back. We will leave Getaria behind and follow the coastal way to Zarautz and Orio from where we will drive up Mount Igueldo. During this scenic ride we will pass green fields, farmhouses and admire incredible views of the ocean.
